To commemorate World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) 2025, Center for Indonesian Medical Students' Activities (CIMSA) Unmul conducted a series of educational initiatives to raise public awareness, particularly among the younger generation, about the dangers of smoking. With the theme Fight Real Effects of Smoking for Health (FRESH), the campaign consisted of two main activities: A ground campaign and a seminar.
The ground campaign took place on (25/5/2025) at Gelanggang Olahraga (GOR) Sempaja, Samarinda, targeting the public engaged in exercise. During this event, CIMSA Unmul members distributed educational pamphlets containing material about the dangers of smoking with persuasive messages encouraging people to quit smoking and reject the use of cigarettes and vapes. To assess the effectiveness of the education, a pretest and posttest were conducted with participants. Additionally, a free health check up booth was provided, offering blood pressure measurements, consultations with a pulmonary medicine resident, and spirometry examinations.
The primary goal of this campaign was to build collective awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco products and promote healthier living, especially among youth and teenagers who are often targeted by the tobacco industry.
The campaign culminated in a seminar held on (31/5/2025) at SMA Negeri 3 Samarinda, titled “FRESH x ALSA CARING HANDS.” This seminar was a collaboration between CIMSA and Asia Laws Students’ Association (ALSA), and it offered a comprehensive program including a pretest, a main seminar session, a posttest, an interactive practicum (workshop) on the dangers of smoking, and a Focus Group Discussion to encourage deeper student reflection on smoking-related issues. The seminar featured two essential perspectives: The medical and health consequences of smoking, and the legal regulations governing tobacco use in Indonesia.
The seminar was delivered in an engaging and accessible manner for students, incorporating interactive Q&A sessions. A highlight of the event was the hands on practicum session, where students observed visual simulations demonstrating how cigarette smoke particles affect human organs. This approach was designed to provide a tangible understanding of smoking hazards for both active and passive smokers.
Through this initiative, Standing Committee of Public Health (SCOPH) CIMSA Unmul aspires to shape a generation that values health, and is empowered to become agents of change for a smoke free and healthier future.
